Bacterial link to pituitary tumours (August 2017)
Pituitary apoplexy affects a proportion of patients with pituitary tumours, who present with sudden headache and visual symptoms usually due to a bleed into a pituitary adenoma.
In a potentially land mark publication in the journal Pituitary, the team from the University of Manchester, including Mr Gnanalingham propose a role for bacteria in the development of bleeds within pituitary tumours.
This preliminary observation requires further study, but may open up new avenues of research for screening and treatment for patients at risk of developing Pituitary apoplexy.
